The blocking bet

The blocking bet

The “Blocking Bet is a bet on the flop which comes to counter an opponent who made a raise preflop: an excellent method to counteract an experienced player. For example, you start the game as the Small Blind, the player “Under The Gun” and the second player to bed, a player raises four times.

In the big blind everyone goes down and it happens that you have the following cards: 8 Pique – 8 Heart

The pair of 8 has 68% chance of winning in a duel. If you agree to follow the stimulus and the Big Blind player goes down, you find yourself in a duel with the one who made the recovery.

Flop: 10 Clover – 7 Pique – 2 Hearts.

You’re the first to play. What will happen in reality? Your pair of 8 is a ” hand-made . “ But since you do not know the cards your opponent, you will quickly examine the possibilities: A “pair made” more than 8 wins over you, if your opponent has a 10 you’re done. For cons, the flop has no immediate possibility of color or flush draw. He may have at its disposal a 8-9 that would allow him to perform the straight draw. But the Preflop raise with a 8-9 is not impossible.

You’re saying that your opponent has cards in excess of 8-9, see 10 (kind of KQ, AJ, QJ ,…) or even a pair. In such situations, the only way to know is to conduct a “Blocking Bet” and to withdraw the benefit of his raise preflop.

You decide to bet the pot.
Your opponent thinks for a little while and follow you. From that moment, the situation is worrying and you wonder if he does not have a better hand than you.

The Turn: 5 Diamonds.

You decide to bet to test the value of the cards your opponent has (it can easily have a straight draw “Backdoor” from the flop). You then bet at least 75% of the pot. Your opponent thinks and eventually fold.

It’s a real case of Bloking Bet during a live tournament. The player had a match AJ (A tile – tile J). It was therefore effectively a random Straight Backdoor (Backdoor means the situation where you are missing two cards to complete a straight or a flush).
The Blocking Bet in Paris have won the pot against a player Poker Preflop aggressive, but ultimately lost the game. However, one must be careful because if the opponent had taken the turn it would have been difficult for us to get out of foal at the River, because everything would be inclined to believe that the enemy had the advantage over you. So please use it wisely.
